Long Doi Son Pagoda is located on Doi Son Mountain in Tien Son Commune, Duy Tien Town, Ha Nam Province. The pagoda was built on the top of Doi Mountain, in a 2-hectare forest garden. The pagoda faces south, just like the proverb: "The knee of Doi Mountain, the foot of Tuan Vuong, the origin of the Emperor, passed down through the ages". On the top of this sacred mountain, in 1054, King Ly Thanh Tong and Princess Y Lan presided over the construction of the pagoda and named it Dien Linh Tu. During the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong, the construction, expansion and construction of the Sung Thien Dien Linh stupa (from 1118-1121) became a famous landmark, a major Buddhist center of the Ly Dynasty in our country. The tower stood firm for 3 centuries, until the early 15th century, when the Ming invaders came to invade our country and destroyed the tower. Fortunately, the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele, 06 Kim Cuong statues, the Kinari bird statue and thousands of architectural decorative panels made of terracotta (Artifacts discovered after the archaeological excavation in 2000) remained.
In particular, the precious Sung Thien Dien Linh stele recorded the entire construction process, symbolic meaning, historical and cultural value of Doi Pagoda and Sung Thien Dien Linh tower during the Ly Dynasty. During the Later Le, Mac, Nguyen Dynasties, the people of Doi Son and visitors from all over worked to restore the pagoda. The largest restoration was during the Nguyen Dynasty, the pagoda had over 100 rooms, large and small, with both internal and external architecture. In March 1947, Long Doi Son Pagoda was destroyed by war once again. After 1954, peace was restored in the North, the government and people of Doi Son carried out renovations, the largest of which was in 1958, completing the main works here. Along with the ancient architectures that have been renovated and embellished, and other infrastructures that have been invested in, the pagoda has increasingly attracted visitors from near and far to visit and sightsee. It can be said that among the Buddhist festivals in Ha Nam, the most special and crowded is the Doi Son pagoda festival. The pagoda opens its festival from March 19 to 21 (Lunar calendar) every year. On the 19th, from early morning, the palanquin procession has performed a ceremony from the foot of the mountain to the pagoda to offer incense in memory of King Ly Thanh Tong and Princess Y Lan, who contributed to the construction of the pagoda. After the incense offering ceremony, there are male and female worshiping teams to thank Heaven and Buddha. The solemn ceremony ended, followed by the festival with many games such as: cooking contest, weaving contest, rowing, singing cheo, dancing the four sacred animals, human chess...
The most unique and impressive thing is that in the Doi Son region festival, in addition to the Doi Pagoda festival, there is also the Tich Dien festival. According to "Brief History of Vietnam", in the year Dinh Hoi (987), King Le Dai Hanh came to plow the Tich Dien field in Doi Son and received a jar of gold and a jar of silver. From there, a beautiful custom was started: "Tich Dien Dau Xuan" for the kings of the following dynasties to follow the example of promoting agriculture.
The Tich Dien festival is held from the 5th to the 7th of the Rieng month (Lunar calendar). The opening ceremony on the morning of the 5th is the ceremony of carrying water from the village well to the pagoda, in the evening at Doi Tam communal house, there is a ceremony to inform and ask the village's Thanh Hoang to open the festival. On the morning of the 6th, there are buffalo painting and decoration competitions, and in the evening, Doi Pagoda organizes a grand ceremony to pray for peace for all living beings. On the 7th, a plowing ceremony is held (using buffaloes to plow the fields). On the morning of the 7th, after the incense offering ceremony, the central plowing ceremony of the festival is held with the wish for favorable weather, good harvests, and prosperity for every family. Along with the main rituals, the festival area also organizes games, entertainment, folk arts, and tourism services to meet the sightseeing needs of tourists from all over the country. With the above historical and cultural values: In 1992, Doi Son Pagoda was recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) as a National Historical and Cultural Relic. In 2018, Doi Son Pagoda was ranked as a Special National Relic by the Prime Minister. In 2019, the Doi Son Pagoda Festival was decided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to be listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. In 2013, the Prime Minister decided to recognize the Sung Thien Dien Linh stele and the Kim Cuong statue set (06 statues) of the Ly Dynasty as national treasures. (Source: Ha Nam Provincial Museum)
